Melissa Gates always knew she wanted to work for the federal government. As a woman with limited mobility, she knew that the security of a job with the federal government would help her achieve her career goals. However, after earning a degree in communications, she struggled to make it through the hiring process. “Being a person with a disability has been a journey,” Melissa said. “Getting a job was extremely hard.”
After spending over three years in a customer service role where she had to be on her feet for eight to twelve hours a day and face challenging situations without proper accommodations, Melissa knew it was time for a change.
When a coworker suggested that Melissa explore Melwood, she was initially skeptical. She had previously tried other job assistance programs without much success. However, her experience with Melwood was a game-changer. Within a few months, Melissa secured a position as a secretary at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. The shift from solo applications to being a Melwood contractor was a revelation for Melissa. “Now that I’ve gotten my foot in the government door, they see me.”
With the support of an accommodating employer, Melissa has flourished professionally and personally. She’s become a star employee at Goddard and helps keep the office running smoothly.
Today, Melissa is a beacon of inspiration and a proud advocate for people with disabilities. Her association with Melwood has not only boosted her professional growth but also instilled in her the confidence to speak up for necessary changes in her daily life. Whether it's about the accessibility of restaurants or resources for people in the workplace, Melissa is not afraid to voice her concerns. Through SourceAmerica’s Grassroots program, she has even had the opportunity to address Congress on behalf of people with disabilities.
“I’ve been on TV, I’ve been in print, I’ve been able to have people hear me,” Melissa said. “I know there are more people like myself with disabilities trying to knock down the door. I’ve been advocating for myself on a lower level before Melwood, but never to the level of this before.”
Melissa has always had the ability to be a star employee. What she needed was the support of an organization that could help her overcome the barriers her disability posed. Now, Melissa gets to give back as a strong voice, telling others about how AbilityOne can provide pathways to meaningful employment even when you think you’re out of options.
