On the 50th anniversary of the Rehabilitation Act, there’s still work to be done to increase disability employment

This year marked the 50th anniversary of the Rehabilitation Act, a landmark legislation that has become the foundation of federal protection for Americans with disabilities. President Biden reflected on both the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans With Disability Act in his NDEAM remarks, acknowledging that while these milestones are critical, there is more work to be done.

50 years later, people with disabilities still face barriers to entry and remain without gainful employment at much higher rates than the national average. AEAW President Dwight Davis addresses the need for modernizing federal hiring practices in his latest op-ed in Federal News Network, examining the current state of disability employment and pointing out how modernization not only will help realize the vision the Rehabilitation Act laid out 50 years ago but will help reduce government spending and boost individual economic mobility.
